At least 12 workers were killed when a wall collapsed at a salt packaging factory in Gujarat’s Morbi district on Wednesday. Several workers are still feared trapped under the rubble.
State Labor and Employment Minister and local MLA Brijesh Merza said the incident took place at the Sagar Salt factory located inside the Halvad industrial area. “At least 12 workers were killed when the walls collapsed. Efforts are still on to rescue others trapped under the rubble, “said Merza.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the tragedy and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the relatives of the deceased.
“The tragedy caused by the collapse of a wall in Morbi is heartbreaking. I offer my condolences to the bereaved family. Let the injured recover quickly. Local authorities are providing all possible assistance to the victims, “Modi tweeted.
The PMO said on Twitter that each of the deceased’s close relatives would be compensated Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. 50,000 will be given to each of the injured, it was added.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also took to Twitter to express his condolences over the tragedy He spoke on the phone with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel about the ongoing rescue operation, he said.
Chief Minister Patel has announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the relatives of the victims and directed the district administration to carry out rescue and relief work, a statement from his office said.
