Qualcomm has unveiled its latest mobile platforms – Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 SoCs.
Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 has made the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC a success, and Qualcomm says the platform can deliver up to 10% faster CPU performance and 30% improved power efficiency than its predecessor. Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, an upgrade to the Snapdragon 778G platform, offers 20% faster graphics rendering.
In addition to the mobile platform, chipmaker has also unveiled its wireless AR smart viewer reference design based on the Snapdragon XR2 platform.
Snapdragon 8+ GEN 1, SNAPDRAGON 7 GEN 1 availability
Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 will use Asus ROG, Honor, Black Shark, Lenovo, Motorola, iQoo, Nubia, Oppo, OnePlus, Realme, Redmi, Xiaomi, Vivo and ZTE mobile platforms. Smartphones based on the platform will debut in the third quarter, Qualcomm said.
The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 will be available in the second quarter on Oppo, Honor and Xiaomi smartphones.
Snapdragon 8+ GEN 1 Specification
The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 can clock up to 3.2GHz, which helps deliver 10% faster CPU performance than the previous generation, which debuted in December. The new chip comes with the same architecture of the current flagship Snapdragon model and boasts the same Crew CPU and Adreno GPU. However, its faster clock speeds provide better performance. The US company further claims that Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 can offer up to 60 extra minutes of gameplay on a single charge.
For photography, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 comes with the latest Snapdragon Sight technology that supports 8K HDR video recording and HDR +. It includes 18-bit triple ISP, which claims to offer up to 64MP photos.
The processor also features a fourth-generation Snapdragon X65 5G modem-RF system that delivers 5G speeds of up to 10 Gbps. The company has integrated Snapdragon Sound technology, which helps enable high-resolution music playback, clear voice calls and higher audio quality while playing video and games within the new platform. Snapdragon 7 GEN 1 Specification
Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is designed with mobile gaming in mind. The chip features some premium Snapdragon Elite gaming features, including an Adreno Frame Motion Engine that can double the framerate to turn it into upscale content. It supports Quad HD + display.
Chipmaker Snapdragon 7 has integrated its Spectra Triple ISP into the Gen1 platform to support three cameras as well as take photos with resolutions up to 200MP. The seventh generation Qualcomm AI engine comes with the Deep Learning Face Detect feature.
The company claims that the Snapdragon 7 Gen has up to 30% better AI performance than the Snapdragon 778G SoC launched on May 1, 2021.
The 4nm process-based platform is also the first Snapdragon 7 Series model to come with a dedicated trust management engine and Android Ready SE for enhanced user safety.
Qualcomm Wireless AR Smart Viewer
Qualcomm has unveiled its Wireless AR Smart Viewer reference design that will help equipment and design makers bring new augmented reality (AR) specs. Based on the Snapdragon XR2 platform, the reference design has a 40% thinner profile and a more ergonomically balanced weight distribution than the AR Smart Viewer design powered by the previous Snapdragon XR1 platform.
Made by China-based Goertek, the hardware features a dual micro-OLED binocular display. The glasses also have a no-motion-blur feature for a smooth AR experience.
Qualcomm has integrated its FastConnect 6900 to offer WiFi 6E and Bluetooth support. Reference design, Qualcomm said, can have a delay of less than three milliseconds between the connected smartphone and its display.
The design can be integrated with Qualcomm’s FastConnect XR software suite.
