Skoda Mlada has begun building battery systems for electric vehicles based on the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB) in Boleslav. This makes it the only manufacturing facility of the MEB battery system in Europe outside of Germany.
It is looking for 250 employees onboard to assemble about 250,000 MEB battery systems per year at this facility. In addition to Skoda cars, these batteries will be installed in cars made of Volkswagen, Audi and Seat.
Michael Wellzclass, Production and Logistics Member of the Skoda Auto Board, said: “Today is a special day for Skoda Auto. By starting production of the MEB battery system, we are now building the perfect core component in the core parts of the company. This means that we have achieved another goal towards our successful transformation into electromobility. “
He added, “I would like to thank the entire team who have worked so hard in recent months to set up this new production line. We have invested around 130 million euros and now can build 250,000 MEB battery systems a year – for Skoda’s e-models and other group brands. Our goal is clear: we want to make e-components or e-vehicles at three check plants by 2030. “
Christian Blail, head of component production at koda Auto, added: “Our new MEB battery system sets the standard for assembly line efficiency, automation, accuracy, cleanliness and digitization. In introducing complex plant technologies, we are drawing on the skills and experience gained over the decades and relying on our highly motivated and qualified staff. In collaboration with Volkswagen Group Components and our partner companies and suppliers, we are taking an important step in the transition from combustion engines to electromobility by building battery systems. We will reach the next milestone by the end of 2023 when we bring the second expansion phase online, enabling us to build a total of 380,000 battery systems a year. ”
The Czech carmaker’s headquarters is the only manufacturing site in Europe outside of Germany where the MEB battery system is manufactured.
The smallest version of the battery with eight modules has a capacity of 55 kWh and the medium version with nine modules has a capacity of 62 kWh. The largest battery with 12 modules has an 82 kWh capacity. In addition to the modules, each contains 24 cells, the components of a MEB battery system include a battery housing with an integrated cooling system, a battery management system and the necessary electrical connections.
Skoda Auto Mlada also manufactures other e-components in Boleslav, such as high-voltage traction batteries used in plug-in hybrid vehicles from the Superb, Octavia and other group brands that have been manufactured here since 2019.
As part of its next level – ডkoda Strategy 2030, the carmaker plans to make e-vehicles or e-components on all three production sites by the end of this decade. By then, the company expects the share of all electric car sales in Europe to increase by 50 to 70 percent, depending on market development.
